Patio Fireplace

One of the most poplar fireplaces for patios are clay "chimeneas." You can probably find them at any local garden store. They are very decorative and can be purchased for as little as $100 and the price then works its way up to around $400.

Chimeneas are the type of patio fireplace you should go for if you want small intimate fireplaces. If this is the type of patio fireplace you think would best suit your home, then, with clay models, you always want to insulate the inside bottom with either sand or volcanic rock so that the heat is not so intense that the clay will crack. If you do not want to do this, then be sure to keep fires within the small to medium range. The chimeneas are built more for looks, than heat.

So, what do chimeneas mean to you work wise? For one, they require yearly coats of acrylic wax or water sealer to protect against moisture penetration. Or, you should get a fire retardant vinyl cover to protect against moisture and for winter storage. Basically you do not want to have water enter the chimney of your patio fireplace.

If you want a larger fire, then a chimenea patio fireplace is wrong for you, but a cast iron model will probably be better for you. The cast iron patio fireplace is a little more expensive than some of the other options, most of the time they start at around $400. This may seem high, but it is worth it in that this type of patio fireplace is very durable and can withstand roaring fires and high temperatures. A cast iron patio fireplace also has the added benefit of safety. Most cast iron patio fireplaces have a safety grill and pitched chimneystack to contain hot ash and embers, and some even have extra features like tools and cooking utensils.

If you do not want a completely contained fire in your patio fireplace, then look for a grated cylinder style. These generally cost about $250 and can be used for both the large and small fires. This is the perfect patio fireplace if you want to use your patio for the whole marshmallow and hot dogs thing. Some of the things that you can look for when looking at the grated cylinder are added features like wheels that allow for the fireplace to be moved from location to location with ease. You won't want to move it while it is hot, and you will want to make sure that the area around the patio fireplace is clear, you do not want flammable objects near the open top, also you probably do not want to have this type of patio fireplace on a wood patio, or on the lawn. You will probably want to have it on top of brick or concrete.

Regardless of the type of patio fireplace you purchase, be sure to use wood that is not chemically treated, otherwise you might get fumes. You should also teach children that might be near the patio fireplace about the safety and security.
